Playboy: The Smoking Jacket Or a red herring? Or… ?

Hugh Hefner & Playboy just launched a new site. It’s called “The Smoking Jacket” and is marketed as a PG-13, safe-for-work version of the good ol’ Playboy magazine you’ve always loved.

That’s all fine & dandy. I’m happy for them. And I’m sure that this will boost profits insanely. Good job marketing team. You get an A+ on this project.

But what I haven’t heard anyone else talk about yet is the elephant in the room–that oh-so-small (read: FREAKIN’ HUGE) issue of ethics. Ethics, Ethics, Ethics.

All of us in the adult industry (whether writers, filmstars, directors, billionaires, manufacturers, sex educators, or consumers) know how Playboy can create a trend in an instant that affects all of us (sometimes innocent, sometimes not-so-innocent) bystanders.

Is this new PG-13 site going to create a rash of Adult sites going incognitio & ditching their RTAlabel.org warnings which serve to help parents filter content and help keep children out?

Is it really about creating something that’s safe to view at work?

Because, by the way, Playboy, just as we’ve learned the word dooce to mean someone who gets fired from his or her job for blogging, we’re also well acquainted with the word perv.

Do I want to sit in the cubicle next to the guy (or gal) who’s checking out The Smoking Jacket, getting ready to jack (or jill) off, while fantasizing about what it would be like if Playboy’s full nudes were available? No, I don’t; thankyouverymuch.

Do I want to be the IT guy (or gal) responsible for content-filtering, dealing with this new monstrosity that is going to spawn hundreds of thousands of similar projects and make my job all the more difficult & annoying? No, I don’t; thankyouverymuch.

Do I want to be the parent of a 13 year-old who happens across The Smoking Jacket because he’s pressured to look by all his friends, and by 14 he’s already into the R-rated stuff Playboy offers? No, I don’t; thankyouverymuch.

I understand that there is something to be said for making money. But can’t we make a decent wage and be happy? What’s with the consumerist/capitalist moremoremore musthavemore game of taking over the world? And do we really have to affect industry on a wide-scale while we serve our greed, and disrupt people’s productivity at work and cause problems for minors? I don’t think so, Playboy. But thankyouverymuch for the ripples you spread.

Where is the line drawn? What about all the sex bloggers (you know who you are) that don’t have RTA encoded in their pages because they are afraid it will negatively impact their traffic or upset their visitors?

What happened to the world where we looked out for each other, and even though we believed in play, we always believed in safety first & foremost? It’s not just about keeping minors safe, but it starts there.

Then, if you want to go hide in the broom closet at work, with your netbook from home, browsing The Smoking Jacket (maybe even reading “How to Get Laid at Work”) on another company’s wireless network, it’s all good with me. Just don’t tell me about it (and for G-d’s sake, don’t try to sleep with me), thankyuouverymuch.

Protect our children; Protect yourself. Play safe. Stay safe.

Blissfully Yours
